Safety Tips For Using On-line Classifieds

General tips and not to be considered a complete list

  • Creating your online Ad
  • Communicating with the buyer/seller
  • Showing an item that is transportable in a public place
  • Showing an item that is not transportable (at home - exercise caution)
  • AVOID SCAMS

Creating your online Ad

DO NOT divulge any personally identifiable information!

This would include your:

  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Home address
  • House number visible in a photo
  • Tag number visible in a photo of your car
  • Anything that can be linked to your location!

If any of these things are put into the body of your Ad, even accidentally, you leave yourself open to potential problems. At BMFO.com, we have safeguards built right into your Ad, if you use them correctly.

Communicating with the buyer/seller

Communication is necessary to complete your transaction. However, NEVER give out your phone, email or address to someone you are not comfortable with. At BMFO.com we have a private messaging system in place to handle initial contact. We recommend back and forth dialogue at least a couple times before you decide to proceed. We have a method for putting your phone number in your ad if you are comfortable doing so. Your number is only visible to registered members and NOT freely open on the internet.

Trust your instincts, if something doesn't feel right, most likely its not! If the deal is too good to be true, or the other party seems wishy-washy in any way, we recommend you stop immediately. If you agree to meet someone, ALWAYS get their phone number.

Showing an item that is transportable in a public place

At BMFO.com, we feel it is best not to invite people to your home for every little item you sell. When an item is small and easily transported, it's best to meet the other party in a public place. Always bring a partner when doing so. If you can't bring a partner, it's best to let a friend or family member know what you're doing, who you are meeting, their phone number and how long you expect to be gone.

The following are some suggested meeting places:

  • In a shopping or strip mall
  • A fast food restaurant
  • A big box store parking lot
  • Any public venue that's busy and will have people around.

Anyone with bad intentions does not like to be in the public eye where there will be witnesses, and will shy away from that sort of meeting place.

Showing an item that is not transportable (at home - exercise caution)

When showing a large item that's not transportable you will have to bring people to your home. These would be things like furniture, large appliances, workout equipment etc. Whenever inviting someone to your home, always be sure there is someone else there. If you can't have someone with you, again, its a best practice to phone a family member or friend with the details of the transaction. Inform your friend or family who is coming, what time, for what and a phone number of the buyer. When the buyer arrives, nonchalantly announce to them that your (sister, friend, neighbor) knows they are there and are waiting for you to go to (lunch, dinner, drinks or whatever activity). Always keep your cell phone on your person and ready to dial if need be.

If two people show up, ALWAYS keep them together. A common scam/theft technique is for one to keep you busy while the other is stealing from you!

AVOID SCAMS:

DO NOT SEND MONEY OR MERCHANDISE THROUGH THE MAIL DO NOT ACCEPT CHECKS, MONEY ORDERS OR GIFT CARDS AND DO NOT WIRE MONEY

NO ONE FROM BMFO.COM WILL EVER ASK FOR YOUR CREDIT CARD INFO. NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR CC INFO TO ANYONE CLAIMING TO BE FROM BMFO.COM OR BUYMEFROMOWNER.COM

This is not a complete list in any way. Always be cautious in every situation and use common sense!

Good Luck from Team BMFO!
